The JCDT Single Burning Item (SBI) Test Apparatus is a fully automated, high-precision laboratory testing system designed to determine the reaction-to-fire performance, heat release rate (HRR), smoke production rate (SPR), and flame spread of building products (excluding floorings) exposed to the thermal attack of a single burning item. Engineered strictly in accordance with EN 13823, GB/T 20284-2026, GB 8624-2025, and EN 13501-1 (Euroclass A2, B, C, D), this apparatus serves as an elite alternative to imported systems for international certification laboratories.

Featuring an automated computer data acquisition system, dual-layer insulated collector hoods and exhaust ducts, automatically regulated mass flow exhaust (0.5 to 0.65 m³/s), precision gas analyzers, and a white-light smoke measurement assembly, the JCDT SBI Apparatus automatically calculates key flammability parameters including FIGRA (Fire Growth Rate Index), SMOGRA (Smoke Growth Rate Index), and THR600s (Total Heat Release over first 600s).

Patented original structural design

The apparatus is protected by a China Utility Model Patent granted by the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), Patent No. ZL 2023 2 1784220.9. The 2023 grant covers the structural design of the JCDT SBI test chamber, confirming the equipment originates from in-house engineering rather than a re-badged imported unit.

Applicable Standards & Global Compliance

This Single Burning Item (SBI) test equipment allows accredited inspection bodies and research institutes to evaluate building materials for international fire classification and CE marking:

Standard Code Standard Title & Scope Primary Testing Application
EN 13823 / BS EN 13823 Reaction to fire tests for building products — Building products excluding floorings exposed to the thermal attack by a single burning item Primary international SBI test standard for determining HRR, SPR, FIGRA, and SMOGRA for European building product compliance
EN 13501-1 Fire classification of construction products and building elements — Part 1: Classification using data from reaction to fire tests Mandatory European classification framework for Euroclasses A2, B, C, and D building products
GB/T 20284-2026 Single burning item test for building materials or products Mandatory Chinese national standard defining hardware and analytical metrics for SBI flammability testing
GB 8624-2025 Classification for burning behavior of building materials and products National classification standard for safety evaluation of wall linings, thermal insulation boards, and composite panels

Key Functional & Engineering Highlights

  • Automated Smoke Exhaust Regulation: Precision mass flow controllers automatically maintain exhaust duct flow rates between 0.5 m³/s and 0.65 m³/s throughout the entire test cycle.
  • Fully Automated Computer Acquisition: High-speed software automatically logs output from mass flow meters, pressure transducers, thermocouples, optical smoke systems, and gas analyzers at 3-second data intervals.
  • Automatic Parameter Calculation: Software computes real-time Fire Growth Rate Index (FIGRA0.2kW/s & FIGRA0.4kW/s), Smoke Growth Rate Index (SMOGRA), Total Heat Release (THR600s), and Total Smoke Production (TSP600s).
  • Double-Layer Thermal Insulation: Collection hood, exhaust duct, and collector feature double-layer thermal insulation to prevent heat loss and ensure high-accuracy calorimetric data capture.
  • Modular Detachable Combustion Chamber: Built on a heavy-duty cabinet frame (3150 × 3150 × 2500 mm) featuring easy disassembly, corrosion resistance, and optimized thermal durability.
  • High-Precision Sensing Suite: Utilizes imported K-type sheathed thermocouples (±0.5 °C accuracy) and a 0–200 Pa high-precision differential pressure transducer (±2 Pa accuracy).

Single Burning Item (SBI) Testing Principle & Workflow

Test Setup & Principle:

The SBI test evaluates the fire response of a building specimen mounted on a trolley inside the combustion chamber, forming a right-angled corner exposed to a 30 kW propane sand burner flame. Flue gases are collected through the insulated hood and exhaust pipe, where oxygen consumption calorimetry and white-light attenuation systems continuously determine heat and smoke release rates.

Standardized Testing Procedure:

  1. Mount long (1500 mm × 1000 mm) and short (1500 mm × 495 mm) specimen wings onto the mobile specimen trolley to form a 90° corner.
  2. Condition specimens according to standard atmospheric requirements prior to wheeling the trolley into the SBI combustion chamber.
  3. Initiate automatic exhaust fan stabilization to lock duct air velocity between 0.5 m³/s and 0.65 m³/s.
  4. Run baseline zero/span calibration for gas analyzers ($O_2 / CO_2$) and the optical white-light smoke measurement system.
  5. Ignite the auxiliary burner for baseline measurement, then shift gas flow to the main corner burner to ignite the specimen for a 20-minute exposure period.
  6. The computerized software continuously logs data every 3 seconds, plots HRR/SPR curves, and automatically generates certified compliance reports upon completion.
